When we reach the retirement age of 65, many seniors — especially those who live alone — have difficulty getting food on the table. As a result, Meals on Wheels can be one of their only social connections in their community. Meal delivery allows them to stay in their own homes, maintain their independence and have a good healthy meal.

Highlights

  • Meals on Wheels delivers nutritious meals to seniors, fostering independence and providing social connections.
  • Seniors benefit from balanced meals, reducing the risk of malnutrition and promoting better physical and mental health.
  • The program operates through restaurant partnerships and volunteer deliveries, with costs varying based on location and meal plans.

What Is Meals On Wheels?

Meals on Wheels is the Canada’s most trusted service for delivering meals to seniors, and people with disabilities. They are a not-for-profit organization that believes good nutrition is a cornerstone of independence, which is why they deliver millions of nutritious meals each year from their network of local partners.

Their warm, cooked meals are provided to seniors in their homes by volunteers. Meals are prepared and delivered by volunteers, who then deliver the food to the senior’s doorstep.

A volunteer will not only bring the food to a senior’s home, but also check in with them about any concerns or problems they may be having. It’s a good way to keep an eye out for seniors who live by themselves.

Benefits Of Meals On Wheels

Meals on Wheels is a great service for seniors. Seniors who are unable to cook for themselves can benefit from the program, which provides meals. It’s also a great way for seniors to stay social and connected to the community while they’re receiving their nutritious meals.

The benefits of Meals on Wheels go beyond just providing plain nourishment or social connection, however. It’s also an opportunity for seniors to eat nutritionally balanced meals! The meals that come as part of this program are usually made up of fresh ingredients with no preservatives or additives added in—a far cry from what we might consider “fast food.”

Why Seniors Should Use Meals On Wheels

Seniors should use Meals on Wheels for several reasons:

  • They need to eat well to stay healthy
  • Seniors who eat well have better mental and physical health
  • Seniors who eat well are less likely to get sick
  • Seniors who eat well are more likely to live longer

They need to eat well because seniors are at a higher risk for malnutrition. Seniors who don’t eat well have an increased chance of developing diseases like obesity, diabetes and heart disease. They also have a harder time recovering from illnesses and injuries.

Seniors who eat well are also better able to perform daily activities like bathing and dressing themselves. Eating well can also help prevent falls and accidents around the home. How Does Meals On Wheels Work?

Meals on Wheels works through a partnership between the local restaurant industry and community volunteers. Restaurants donate a portion of their food or excess food to be then prepared by Meals on Wheels staff. These hot meals can be prepared with special diets in mind.

Meals on Wheels then deliver the meals to senior citizens in need of nutritional support. This delivery process is carefully scheduled so that each senior receives their meal at a time when they are able to eat it comfortably, without any interruptions or disruptions to normal daily routines.

Most of the time, the meals are then delivered using reusable containers that help reduce waste and allow for easy clean up after consumption!

Although Meals on Wheels provides hot meals, there are some programs that offer frozen meals. Each program in various local areas can operate different. Ask local Wheels programs regarding this service.

The Right Diet With Meals On Wheels Program

A balanced diet is essential to the health and well being of older adults. It helps them stay active, and it can help prevent weight gain and problems with their bones and joints. The right amount of protein, carbohydrate, fat and vitamins and minerals should be part of every meal plan.

Remember to eat the rainbow!

  • Lean protein (lean meats, seafood, eggs, beans)
  • Fruits and vegetables (think orange, red, green, and purple)
  • Whole grains (brown rice, whole wheat pasta)
  • Low-fat dairy (milk and its alternatives)

The bottom line is that a healthy diet can improve quality of life and make seniors feel better. While there are no magic bullets or quick fixes when it comes to lifelong health, a balanced diet is still one of the best things you can do for yourself. We’re not saying that eating more fruits and vegetables will cure all ills—but we’re also not saying it won’t!

  1. I’ve searched the web, but nowhere is the menu for Meals on Wheels! It’s important that meals are not only nutritious, but there are a lot of likes and dislikes of certain food. As a senior care giver I’m interested in the program, but first I want to see what is offered.

    • Hi Heather,
Absolutely agreed! It should be healthy, nutritious and delicious. Meals On Wheels is a national program, but it’s partnered with and runs through local channels (restuarants and food kitchens). So each area would have seperate menus. It’s best to search their “Find Meals” or “Find Local Providers” sections, and contact the provider directly for details on the meals. Select locations can offer vegan or vegetarian meals, Kosher meals, etc.
