American Standard is our best overall pick because it combines recognizable walk-in tub designs with an established Canadian presence and a full-service quotation path.

Safe Bathing Canada is particularly compelling for Ontario homeowners who want a Canadian installer and strong door-warranty coverage. Home Depot suits confident shoppers arranging their own installer.

Full-service companies bundle assessment and installation; retailers sell the tub and may leave the homeowner to coordinate trades. The cheapest tub is not always the cheapest finished project.

The list mixes manufacturers, installers and retailers so Canadian families can compare both turnkey and self-managed projects.

Buying guide

How to choose a walk-in tub

The right tub must fit both the bather and the bathroom. A detailed site assessment can prevent expensive surprises.

1

Check the entry

Compare threshold height, inward- versus outward-swinging doors and space to approach with a walker or wheelchair.

2

Measure the seat

Confirm seat width, door opening, tub depth, grab-bar position and whether a transfer bench is needed.

3

Plan hot water

Walk-in tubs can hold far more water than standard tubs. Verify water-heater capacity, fill time and fast-drain requirements.

4

Define installation

Include removal, disposal, plumbing, electrical work, wall or floor finishing and permits in the written scope.

5

Choose therapy carefully

Air and water jets add comfort but also cleaning, power and maintenance requirements. Make sure controls are easy to reach.

6

Protect the warranty

Get written coverage for the door seal, tub shell, pumps, fixtures, labour and travel; note required maintenance.

Canadian tax-credit reminder

Qualifying homeowners may be able to claim eligible accessibility renovations through the federal Home Accessibility Tax Credit. Confirm eligibility and documentation requirements on the Canada Revenue Agency website or with a tax professional before relying on the credit.

Frequently asked questions

Walk-in tub questions Canadian families ask

How much does a walk-in tub cost in Canada?

Retail tubs may show a product-only price, while full-service companies quote the entire installation. Finished cost depends on the tub, plumbing, electrical work, bathroom repairs and optional therapies.

Do you have to remain in the tub while it fills and drains?

Usually yes, because the door must stay closed while water is in the tub. Fast-fill and fast-drain systems can reduce waiting time, subject to the home’s plumbing.

Can a walk-in tub replace a standard bathtub?

Often yes, but the installer should confirm the alcove dimensions, drain position, water supply, electrical requirements and finishing work.

Are walk-in tubs safe for wheelchair users?

Some outward-swinging and wider-door models support easier lateral transfers, but fit varies. Arrange an assessment with the intended user and mobility device present.

Can a walk-in tub qualify for a tax credit?

Eligible accessibility renovations may qualify for the federal Home Accessibility Tax Credit. Eligibility depends on the person, dwelling and work completed, so confirm with the CRA or a tax professional.

  1. Very disappointing. Purchased an Assisto tub and the next year the company owner dies and none of the assisto tubs warranty is any good. I did get ahold of a company that is taking care of the brand replacement parts but it was pricy. It cost me over $3000 to have the main electronics board replaced and was advised it would also cost another $3000+ to get a 10 year extended warranty.
